The Unhappy Medium by Common Ground Theatre Company
6th June

by Pat Whymark, Julian  Harries & Pat Marlowe

Was he psychic or pseudo, trickster or telepath? No-one knew…least of all, him.

Common Ground present an “entrancing” new comedy. Set in the 1920s, The Unhappy Medium tells the story of Montague Faulke , a “spiritualist” and some-time music hall entertainer (played by Julian Harries), as he struggles with his conscience, his creditors and his put-upon assistant Aubrey Miles (Patrick Marlowe who last performed with Common Ground in The Signalman).

Matters come to a head when Faulke comes under the scrutiny of psychic investigator Morton McLean, played by Dick Mainwaring – his last appearance with the company was in Stuff In The Attic. Both he and Pat Marlowe have appeared in Eastern Angles’ Christmas shows.

Expect oodles of ectoplasm, lashings of levitation and a bump or two in the night.

Our autumn 2015 tour of The Count of Monte Cristo went down a storm with audiences and critics alike. Andrew Clarke, reviewing for the EADT, said:

“This is a dazzling piece of comic confection which showcases the collective talents of a touring company which cleverly mixes experience with youthful talent and it takes real skill to take a sturdy piece of classic literature and turn it into one of the most hilarious and imaginative shows of the year.”

Common Ground Theatre Co was set up in 2007 by Pat Whymark and Julian Harries to create new music theatre. We have been touring steadily since then, mainly within East Anglia, producing seventeen new plays which have been received stunning reviews both here and in London. We have received funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, The Suffolk Foundation, The Seckford Foundation, Suffolk Youth Ops, The Brook Trust and Suffolk Single Gateway.

Common Ground are committed to keeping small-scale theatre alive and well in East Anglia, presenting shows that are, first and foremost, entertaining. Our productions are character-based and always emotionally engaging.

Julian Harries & Pat Whymark are the creative team behind The Mystery of St Finnigan’s Elbow, Dial M For Murgatroyd & many more Eastern Angles xmas shows, and it is that sense of playfulness that we hope runs through all our work. As an actor Julian has appeared in Eastenders, Detectorists, Spies of Warsaw, Doctors, and performed with The Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal National Theatre and in the West End.

“The spoof to beat all spoofs” (The Observer) “Blissfull” (The Times)  “Madcap comedy gold” (The Stage) “A marvellous romp…should delight even the most jaded of viewers” (In Suffolk) (from reviews of recent Whymark-Harries productions)
